A live, cohort-based workshop about critical thinking in design.
Guidelines can feel limiting to a designer. So, designers go rogue and create their own patterns based on prior experience and personal craft. However, there are subconscious biases influencing those decisions. Even with an open canvas, designers tend to reach for what they’re familiar with. That’s why constraints are uncomfortable; they are often unfamiliar.
This workshop teaches you to see the hidden assumptions behind the patterns you reach for, recognize when familiar is holding you back, and choose to build something better.

Generative tools can only predict the average of what already exists and hand it back to you. Critical thinking is uniquely human work, and it gets more valuable the more AI does everything else.
Who is teaching
Donnie D’Amato, founder of Design Systems House.
I’ve spent my career writing the guidelines other people design within, so I know exactly what happens when someone feels those rules get in the way. I developed Mise en Mode on the idea that tighter constraints give you more room to express something, not less.
I’ve taught in university classrooms and on conference stages long enough to know the patterns are the easy part. The hard part is reflecting on the design choices we make.
